American Legion brings state convention to Mac

McMinnville’s Legion Post 21 and auxiliary are hosting the activities. Sessions are planned at the Elks Club, McMinnville Community Center and Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum.

Mike Morris of McMinnville, immediate past department commander, said 300 to 600 delegates are expected. He said National Commander Mike Helm will be attending as well.

Helm, a Kansas resident, served in the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division during the Vietnam War. He has been a member of Jack Helt American Legion Post 313 in Lebanon, Nebraska, since 1972.

An honor guard will greet Helm when he arrives this afternoon. He will start his visit by meeting with local veterans and touring the aviation museum.

The convention’s opening ceremonies will be held Wednesday. Sessions will continue through Saturday.

Legion members will present awards at a Friday luncheon and conduct state elections Saturday.
