Good. Government schools should stick to the 3 Rs, free of distraction. But wait - Kate just signed a bill to kill the 3 Rs.

Don Dix

Rotwang,

Yes, the gov. signed a bill (as I understand it) this week that allows HS graduation without proficiency in reading, writing, and arithmetic (for 3 years) -- of course the news covered nothing but Covid and Portland murders -- and this slid by without any notice.

Questions -- What moron came up with the idea reading proficiency isn't important or necessary?

What exactly is being taught in schools without including the 3 Rs?

Rotwang

Don, it only reinforces to me that our Prussian-model government schools, which were originally intended to produce dumb cannon fodder for upcoming wars, are performing exactly as designed.

Like it or not this has now gone through the proper process and been decided. Time to move on and get refocused on reading, writing and arithmetic!
Kids don't come to school to be pressured and converted into becoming social justice warriors. They will get ample chance to be converted to that whole belief system in college. At that age they will be better able to make a mature and informed decision.

In my opinion the schools need to be neutral ground, the only two flags that should be hung are the American Flag and the State flag.

Allowing the other flags, while it shows support for a select group of people, opens Pandora's box for a mess of future problems. It may be these two flags now, and don't get me wrong I support these groups, but what will happen when someone wants to hang a white supremist flag or a religious flag because it represents their values and beliefs? You can't selectively say yes to some and no to others, that is another form of hate and prejudice.

Schools need to be neutral where all students and staff feel safe to go to learn and not be worried that they are in a class where they have to be confronted with prejudice for their beliefs and have it shoved in their face. Bullying is already a problem with shaming for this reason or that, hate and racism need to be dealt with on a case by case basis. We need to teach tolerance and understanding, while we may not be in agreement with each other we can still respect each other and care for for one another as a human being.

Well put gary.

Now if the whole state and country will follow we might get somewhere. We are not marxists here in this country.
