Spartan girls on four game streak

Sheridan girls basketball (4-0) is undefeated and squeezed out a 48-42 victory at the 3A league opener against Dayton on Dec. 18.

Both teams were equally matched as the game was tied eight times. Starting the third quarter the Spartans were down by five points but took a lead 41-40 in the end with a reverse lay-in by Senior forward Logen Watkins.

With 4:12 left and the score at 42-all, the frantic game riddled with turnovers was put to rest and the Spartans went to work.

Watkins drove under the basket for another reverse lay-in and the Spartans took the lead 44-42. The next play she stole the inbound pass and went coast-to-coast with another lay-in. She earned another two steals to end the game and was 11 for 12 for all her two-point attempts of the night.

“The kids missed a lot of free-throws tonight, especially Logen, which is tough because she has such a high shooting percentage,” Sheridan head coach Jeff Lee said.

The Spartans started to move without the ball in the third quarter, which was the key to their success.

“We had key players start moving,” Lee said. “Logen Watkins in particular was moving, some younger players don’t know what to do when they don’t have the ball in their hands,” he said. “Logen stepped up for us and the passes found her.”

He said the Spartans didn’t defend Dayton’s Hadley Hughes, who had 31 points, but will need in future match-ups.

The Spartans had seven steals and eight turnovers. Senior forward Taylor Givens added three steals and senior forward Chloe Ayala added five assists in the nightcap.

“They saw some things they hadn’t seen in our first three games, so it felt like our first game of the year,” Lee said.

Sheridan defeated Oakridge 64-15 on Dec. 12.

Givens lead the Spartans with 20 points, going nine-for-20 on the floor and had four steals. Watkins added 12 points, Ayala had 10 points and added six assists and six steals. Junior guard Meleena Montano also hit double digits with 11 points, adding three assists and five steals.

Hadley Hughes led the Pirates with 30 points to defeated Scio at the league season opener on Dec. 16. Dayton won 59-50.

On Dec. 20 Dayton will travel to Blanchet Catholic (0-5) and Sheridan hosts Taft (4-1), both league games.
