School's out for summer

Students collected their essays and art projects Thursday as  McMinnville schools finished up the 2016-17 academic year. Other schools around Yamhill County also are out for summer.

Most youngsters have a break until the day after Labor Day -- Tuesday, Sept.. 6. Willamina schools will resume a week earlier.

Some districts are planning summer school classes or activities. McMinnville, for instance, will offer summer classes for third graders through the remainder of June and again in August. The district also will offer science, technology, engineering and math camps.

In most cities, summer feeding programs are planned. Supported by federal grants, the programs offer lunch, and, in some cases, breakfast as well. Youths and children 18 and younger can drop in to eat for free. 

McMinnville Public Library and other libraries also are offering special reading programs and activities for kids his summer.
