Japanese drum team performs

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan Japanese School's Taiko Drum Team will perform from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of McMinnville's Sears Hometown Store, 1621 N.E. Baker St.

Taiko, which means fat drum, is a drum and drumming style from Japan that dates back to the sixth century. Its original purpose was to scare off an enemy, as it could be heard across a large battlefield.

The Sheridan team consists of up to nine students performing on large drums.
