If you are a Westsider Trail supporter, there is something you can do this week to move the project one step closer to becoming reality.

I talk with people all over Yamhill County who ask, with a certain impatience, when the Westsider Trail is going to be ready for their families to ride and walk on. Currently, the county has a $1.2 million grant from ODOT to design three of the bridges on the first section of the Trail and to build one of the bridges. This work must be done by early summer, or the county has to return the funds.

Even though the county has not yet started a comprehensive Master Plan for the Trail, there is no reason that this early segment can’t be started.

We need Commissioner Olson to stay true to his original vote to allow the bridge design and building to proceed. Now he seems more likely to vote no and force the county to have to give these valuable funds back. The county’s ability to gain further grants for the Trail and for other projects could be put in jeopardy in the future.

If you are a supporter of the Trail, call, email or write to Commissioner Olson to not give the grant money back, but instead continue to support this important community project. The Commissioners will hold a public hearing on Thursday, February 7 at 10:00 in Room 32 at the County Courthouse….Voice your concern that the Commissioners should use the ODOT grant to start important work on the first section of the Westsider Trail.
