Bears’ dozen: Mac football players honored by GVC

Twelve members of the McMinnville High School football team were honored by the coaches of the Class 6A Greater Valley Conference for their performances in the 2015 season.

Three players were honored more than once, led by junior Cedric Agcaoili-Ostrom. Agcaoili-Ostrom received the Grizzlies’ only first-team selection as a linebacker and earned honorable mention as a running back.

Fellow junior Brad Hessel earned second-team honors as McMinnville’s placekicker and honorable mention at cornerback. Senior Justin Trimble attained honorable mention as a wide receiver and kick returner.

Quarterback Wyatt Smith, a junior, shared second-team honors at that position with McNary senior Trent Van Cleave. Junior punter Colton Ramos continued the Grizzlies’ special teams tradition with second-team honors.

Other McMinnville players meriting honorable mention included senior center Jesus Fajardo, senior offensive tackle Taylor Brown, senior tight end Sam Swenson, sophomore defensive tackle Cooper Bousquet, senior nose guard Luke Grossnickle, senior outside linebacker Grifin Williams and senior safety Jesse Medley.

South Salem quarterback Gabe Matthews and West Salem defensive lineman Vincent Villareal won the conference’s Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year awards, respectively. Saxons head coach Scott Dufault received Coach of the Year honors in leading South Salem to its second consecutive conference title, while North Salem assistant coach Troy Walker was named Assistant Coach of the Year.

McMinnville finished 3-6 overall and 2-6 in the GVC in 2015, going 3-1 in its final four games after an 0-5 start.
