Newberg fined for spill

More than 23,800 gallons of raw sewage were discharged into Chehalem Creek from the Andews Pump Station at 620 Andrews Street. The spill lowered the water quality of the creek below state standards.

The problem reportedly involved a combination of human error and failure of the station’s back-up alarm system. The city has until June 8 to accept the penalty or file an appeal.
