Linfield to play host in first round of playoffs
On a day when the hearts and minds of the Linfield community were far from the football field, the Wildcats learned their NCAA Division III playoff fate.
Linfield will host Chapman, the champion of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, on Saturday, Nov. 22, at noon at Maxwell Field in McMinnville. The Panthers finished the regular season 8-1 overall and 7-0 in the SCIAC.
That one loss, incidentally, came against the Wildcats. Linfield edged Chapman in the regular-season opener for both teams, a 21-14 result on Sept. 13. Linfield was ranked No. 5 nationally by d3football.com at the time; the Wildcats enter the playoffs as the No. 10-ranked team.
The winner of the game will face the winner of a contest between Texas Lutheran and Mary Hardin-Baylor, which will be held Nov. 22 in Belton, Texas, at 10 a.m.
Linfield learned of its playoff fate approximately 16 hours after the fatal stabbing of sophomore linebacker Parker Moore in McMinnville. Wildcats head coach Joseph Smith gave a prepared statement to the media about Moore and his death and took no questions.
