Pirates run away from Bulldogs

WILLAMINA – The Dayton boys basketball team’s winning streak certainly sounds of music in the ears of Pirates’ fans: sixteen, going on 17.
Dayton improved to 16-0 and 5-0 in the Class 3A West Valley League with a 75-46 victory over rival Willamina Friday night at Willamina High School.
The Pirates opened the game on a 12-0 run and led 21-5 at the end of the first quarter. Willamina (5-9, 0-5 WVL) cut its deficit to 30-20 thanks to strong play from Shane Thomas and Brodey Bruckner, but three Bulldog turnovers allowed Dayton to seize a 45-24 halftime lead.
Zach Bernards compiled 21 points (7-of-12 shooting), six assists and five rebounds for the Pirates, while D.J. Flowers posted a double-double (17 points, 12 rebounds). Keon Blanco, Zach Spink and Jarred Ashley each scored eight points for Dayton.
Bruckner led Willamina with 14 points, and Thomas contributed 11 points.
The Pirates play Santiam Christian tonight in Adair Village at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs play at Sheridan tonight at 7:30 p.m.
