Thank you for this sobering and poignant piece. McMinnville needs more affordable housing options - even with two incomes, rent is so steep and prices seem to hike every year. I am thankful that the City recognizes it as a priority and I hope that recognition from our community turns into action. Without affordable homes, many will be priced out of this beautiful community.

This is disturbing...more than half of McMinnville residents are struggling to pay for housing.
It’s not just housing. Costs are rising for groceries, utilities, taxes, childcare, gas, insurance, medical... everything has gone up. Credit card debt has skyrocketed.
Something has to give.

Someone mentioned this months ago, it may have been CubFan. Why haven’t there been any new mobile home parks recently? They are affordable for nearly all income levels and make excellent starter and first time homes. The first home that me and Mrs. Bigfoot owned back in 1998 was a mobile home in Kathleen Manor off of SW Westvale.
Also, why don’t they loosen up the regulations a bit and allow two bedroom, one bath homes with a single car garage. Houses, not duplexes. These types of homes are all over our older neighborhoods. Every new house cannot be built for the $575,000 to $750,000 price range.

Good memory...I probably DID advocate for manufactured homes as an affordable option. They are a good stepping stone for people trying to save money for a stick built home. They are also ideal for people who have limited income. Once you own the home, the monthly lot rents in town are in the range of $700-$900 a month. It used to be they "depreciated" in value, but lately, most are selling substantially above their original price because they are desirable, affordable, and have somewhat small inventory.

How much of rents and mobile home park fees are going to big investment groups? One of them got in trouble in Portland for not maintaining the property and got fined $1 million dollars for their financial priorities being their investors and not their renters. Publicly funded parks would provide a revenue stream and reasonable rates. But, we won't do that. Vienna did that a long time ago and it works well.
