Y-C Soccer Club receives MLS grant

Yamhill-Carlton Soccer Club was awarded $10,000 as the winner of Major League Soccer's MLS Works Community MVP contest, as announced Wednesday evening at halftime of the Major League Soccer All-Star game.

YCSC was nominated by the Portland Timbers; each of the 20 MLS clubs nominated a community endeavor related to soccer as a representative. For over a month, supporters of YCSC and the other clubs voted online or on Twitter, with the winner of the popular vote to receive the first-prize $10,000 grant. The other 19 nominated endeavors each received $1,000.

YCSC founder Karen Wright was on hand at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado -- home of the Colorado Rapids of MLS -- to accept a ceremonial check on behalf of the club. The ceremony occurred at halftime of the MLS All-Stars' game against Tottenham Hotspurs, with MLS leading 2-1.

The club has not specifically indicated how it may use the grant money.
