It's time for kids to play in the park
McMinnville Parks and Recreation is putting on its first Rec Mobile, a summer tour of neighborhood and community parks featuring free family-friendly structured games and sports. It’s meant to be a fun, interactive opportunity for children to play outdoors.
Soccer balls, hula hoops, basketballs and other sports equipment and games will be provided for activities geared toward the children who attend. The first event will be June 25 at Kingwood Park, at 110 N.E. Kingwood, from 1 to 3 p.m.
“It’s for everybody and anybody who wants to come out to play,” said Aaron Johnson, the community center supervisor. He said he wants to show appreciation for McMinnville’s Parks, as July is National Parks and Recreation Month.
Another goal is to bring more people to lesser known parks that aren’t used as often as parks in the city center.
“We’re trying to get people to come out to the parks they might not normally go to,” Johnson said. “Every park is beautiful in its own right.”
Johnson had the idea for Rec Mobile from Baton Rouge, Louisiana’s two mobile recreation units called “BREC on the Geaux,” which drive year round to bring wellness-related activities to schools and parks.
He hopes Rec Mobile will become an annual event here.
Rec Mobile is just one of many summer events and programs Parks and Recreation has to offer, including a survival camp, video game making class and “Dynamite Teen Nights,” laser tag events in City Park and the Aquatic Center.
