The Native Americans regularly burned the underbrush to keep bigger fires at bay and allow the hunters a clear view through the forest floor. And the 'political opposition' (enviros?) is so entangled in 'saving everything natural', that they would rather allow the fires to destroy so much more forest than necessary, just to have their way.
Under these auspices, the Native Americans appear to be the true environmentalists and those who think they are at the cutting edge of forest stewardship have failed miserably. Maybe they should have paid more attention in American history class!
