How did we get here? And by the way, it's not just people from south of our border. People snubbed the laws of this country, took advantage of resources and now citizens are fed up. It's illegal to steal a car; if I steal a car and get caught, I take responsibility and pay the consequences. We have immigrations laws; if someone wants to come here to work and live, the laws need to be heeded. If someone comes here without documentation or stays here with expired visas, well, take responsibility and pay the consequences.

The way Trump is going about it is horrid. But how did we get here? People are fed up with stolen IDs, undocumented people using the health system or collecting social security benefits.

People who do not obey the law and cause harm to others in their selfish recklessness ruin it for everyone. Everyone suffers.

To quote my fellow commenter, HORRID indeed. I have witnessed peaceful resistance and have hope that most Americans will not continue to tolerate living in an authoritarian police state. Freedom, liberty, and the rule of law are not red or blue concepts, they are American concepts.

I might agree with fiddler that having an immigration system that functions is the solution. I remember there was a Congressional proposal that might have help fix the system not long ago that way destroyed by our current occupant of the presidency for political reasons. And the recent beautiful bill did not help the situation. So here we are. Masked people arresting folks off the streets.

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) says this about immigration under Trump --
The Congressional Budget Office issued a report finding that President Trump’s immigration policies, along with those in the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act, will reduce the number of immigrants in the U.S. in the coming years. The CBO now predicts that total net immigration to the U.S. will be 1.6 million people smaller in 2025.

1.6M less net immigrants seems a little more than no effect, but that's just my simple take.

" cloud the moral clarity" Are you kidding?

Don. Here what CBO says about that reduction in net immigration: "Those downward revisions to net immigration lowered projected labor force growth, thereby reducing the labor supply and, in turn, real potential output. The downward revisions to net immigration affect the agency’s projections of labor force growth through two main channels. First, the reduction in net immigration reduces the size of the working-age population (people between the ages of 16 and 64). Second, the reduction in net immigration slightly decreases the average labor force participation rate over the next several years in CBO’s projections."
Maybe fixing the Immigration Process might be a better solution than funding squads of ICE.

The last administration's policies allowed approximately 10M immigrants to enter the US since 2021 (2.5M/yr). It's only a prediction, but 1.6M less in the first year of this administration is a positive, no matter how it's spun.

Pretty soon we'll all be numb to "Partly cloudy today with a 60% chance of immigrant/POC drone strikes"

US business needs workers, along with the goods & services these workers consume. The US Treasury & Social Security Administration needs the tax dollars that these workers generate. Is our congressional leadership so stupid that they can’t develop a guest worker program that can work for all involved? It shouldn’t be that difficult.

13 percent of Oregon’s economy is tied to undocumented workers. We need secure the border, ensure that people who are lawfully allowed to work through e-verify can work here peaceably free from harassment, and ensure that ever naturalized and lawful citizen is treated with the respect every other American is treated with, regardless of their religion race or creed.
