The trees have been dying, lifting curbs, asphalt, and sidewalks, and causing multiple cleanups and care yearly since the 80s (thanx Bill Rutherford). Who knows what else has been damaged by this short-sighted decision. Common sense has always advised that trees should not be placed near hard surface infrastructure for exactly these reasons. But government doesn't think that way - never has.

Rip out all pavement, sidewalks, trees and put in pavers to make 3rd street a walking mall. Plant new trees in the CENTER of the street and away from any infrastructure.

Maybe select appropriate sized plant material for the space. 60’ trees in a 5’X 5’ spot makes no sense. It happens all over town.

Have you seriously considered making 3rd Street downtown a permanent pedestrian street? There is a lot of support from people for the idea plus numerous examples of thriving pedestrian streets in other communities. Would love to see it happen.

But building the Gwendolyn was gonna "destroy" the charm of 3rd Street, eh? Ugh, this is just disgusting.

This project will be a once in an every other generation undertaking that will require short term pain for long term gain.

Getting beyond the nostalgia for the 3rd street tree canopy when trees were younger and smaller is a challenge. You don't need to be an arborist to see the trees have become too big and cause too much damage.
