50 years ago I used to drive for long distances on icy roads in WY. Yes, you had to be extra careful, and slow down a bit. But with few people on the road in that part of the world, you could keep a steady throttle, stay off the brakes and, barring high cross winds, make it without incident. A big Continental Trailways bus once got blown clear into the next lane, but the driver was good, and kind of made a joke out of it ... Very dry ice.

So, I really paid attention to the "slippery" part of the story. Just a short local drive. Most likely surfactants, basically soap, made the ice unnaturally slick. Soap? Yes, from the ongoing geoengineering onslaught we see going on in our skies:
