Why would some citizens have to pay more than others? Isn't that discrimination??
BigfootLives
Come on Joel, not when liberals do it.

The City finds itself with a $1.8 million deficit. I agree with previous comments on other articles here that before this fee is implemented, there should be an audit, made public, as to why we find ourselves in this situation. The city councilors and manager have been very vague as to “why” we have this deficit. Where is the accountability here? And adding a fee that will generate $1.1 million within 6 months will take care of 60% of the deficit, so it stands to reason that at the end of a year, the deficit will be erased. So does that mean the fee will go away? I’m sure not. I agree with Chenoweth, put this to a vote. Let the citizens decide!

CubsFan yes I totally agree with your comments and we should have more visibility & accountability. Ps - 3rd generation Cubs fan.

Did I miss the explanation for the deficit?
BigfootLives
Cubsfan, agreed, but I am sure that any complete explanation or audit (if one happens at all) would be very timely and arrive just after the next election.

City Council hid all of the information about the structural deficit in public budget hearings, reported in this newspaper, over a period of two years. People who just realized this has been a problem have not been paying attention for the last decade.
Those who suddenly believe the city "needs an audit" need to understand that the city budget receives multiple audits every year. All of this happens right out in a very lengthy, very public process that any person can attend in person or online.
