Three face off in primary for county commissioner’s seat

In Yamhill County, the top elected positions are the three people who sit upon the Board of Commissioners and are responsible for guiding a $150 million annual budget, some 600 employees, and the welfare of the county’s more than 107,000 residents.

It’s a nonpartisan post, though partisan politics often surface among the commissioners, who are elected to four-year terms. This year, one new commissioner will be chosen from among three candidates: Lindsay Berschauer, Barbara Boyer and David Wall.

The winning candidate will join Casey Kulla, the commission’s chair, who was elected in 2018, and Mary Starrett, the commission’s vice-chair, who was elected in 2014 and re-elected in 2018.

Rick Olson, who has spent more than 40 years in public service and four years on the commission, announced in March that he would not seek re-election, citing “the divisiveness of government which now is prevalent over our entire political spectrum.”

Olson claimed it had caused “friends to be pitted against friends, neighbors against neighbors and family member against family member,” and he found it “agonizing and difficult to make decisions and build a consensus among citizens.”

That will be among the major challenges of the new commissioner.

At stake is the future of the county: how it will grow, how it will manage competing demands, how it will employ its resources, and, most importantly, how it will respond to the coronavirus pandemic that has gutted budgets, eliminated jobs and thrown the economy into a tailspin.

Election rules state a winner will be declared if one of the candidates receives 50 percent plus one vote. If not, the top two advance to a November runoff.

A quiet campaign is sounding better all the time - ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

• Wall running a quiet campaign ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ
• Boyer has record of arrests
• Berschauer seeking $495,000 in lawsuit claiming emotional distress

Wall is silent and nowhere to be found much less campaign.
Boyer worries me as she couldn't answer questions during the debate forum unless 1) she had the question repeated and 2) she read the answers. Lindsay picked up the questions the first time and answered w o any notes. Clearly Boyer can only respond when another commissioner is feeding her the questions AND the policy answers. She has no original thoughts and has a difficult time articulating any cogent responses.

It is very clear to anyone who truly wants better for Yamhill County that Lindsay Berschauer IS OUR NEXT COUNTY COMMISSIONER!!!

“Mini Me” is a political consultant suing her boyfriend for emotional distress... no thanks

Stella,

You may want to take your own advise as to spreading fake news.

First...Lindsay Berschauer has a name and it is not "mini-me". If the best you can come up with is "mini-me" to Mary Starrett then I would take that as the utmost compliment as Commissioner Starrett is a very knowledgeable, successful, professional elected more then once official that Yamhill County is proud to have.

Second...Ms. Berschauer is has filed a law suit against a homeowner insurance company as she was a victim of a dog attack. That is what what insurance company is for! When you buy a home and you get your homeowner insurance policy they ask you several questions...do you have an alarm, do you have a dog, do you have a trampoline, do you have a pool? All things that tend to be the source of injuries that cause lawsuits and these things with adjust your premiums accordingly.
Do some research please before you comment.

Have you read the lawsuit? It is against her boyfriend who says she was living with him until Fall 2019. She says no to that yet files a very public committee filing saying she did. She is claiming emotional distress (look up what that takes to win. Half million suit ...

None of that is fake news - itโ€™s easily verifiable thru very public records.
