CARLTON — Tommy Douglass, a McMinnville High School junior, took first place in Carlton American Legion Post 173's annual high school oratorical contest, held Saturday.

Contestants are asked to give a prepared speech on a topic related to the Constitution, along with an impromptu one on a randomly assigned topic of like orientation. Tommy delivered his oration on the 14th amendment and his improptu talk on the peaceful transfer of power.

He qualified to compete at district competition, to be held Jan. 27 in Salem. He also was chosen to participate in the American Legion's Boys State program, to be held in June at Willamette University.

The American Legion has been hosting high school speaking contests across the nation since 1938. For more information, visit www.legion.org/oratorical.
