"... to increase the diversity of its staff to reflect the backgrounds of the student body." - Why?

Should the diversity of the student body be a determinant in what staff the School District hires or should there be a unified effort to recruit and train further those candidates that will best serve our children and the community at large?

While I am for equality for all, this reeks of some sort of 'affirmative action ploy' that may or may not be in the best interest of the Mac School District. Before we try to mirror the ethnic makeup of Mac's student body and try to reflect that in the staff added and released, maybe we should all just take a deep breath and let the dust settle before we dive into the shallow end of the pool, where hiring quotas and an inadvertent reverse discrimination policies can somehow be implemented and cause all of us to drown...?

As a former McMinnville teacher, I think it will be great to get more diversity among the staff. And I don’t understand the implication that by doing that we would not be recruiting and training candidates that “best serve our children and community at large.” I don’t think increasing the diversity of the staff at all contributes to a “dive into the shallow end of the pool, where hiring quotas and an inadvertent reverse discrimination policies can somehow be implemented and cause all of us to drown.” I’m very excited that Yanira Vera is joining the school board. Thanks, MSD.
