Naturally everyone working through a system tries to get the best of it, but Bernt's remorse is badly undercut by his desire to lower the restitution owed. He just wants to go back to work so he can repay the debt, he says, but he doesn't want to pay all of it. If he can get away with continuing to rob some of his victims he will. It really puts his brother in law's praise in a new perspective. Bernt will do anything for his friends and family, give them food or the shirt off his back, because he didn't pay for those things himself. It's easy to be generous with stolen money. I'm glad the court appears to have taken that into account in his sentencing.
