Welcome to McMinnville Mr. Gibson!

It's an incredible honor to serve McMinnville in this role. Looking forward to being a part of the community.

It’s good to see that Mr. Gibson is already following local news.

Since he is, I’d like to not only welcome him to McMinnville and Oregon, but to strongly suggest MBWA. (Management By Walking Around).

Even though it will be rainy when you get here, and the temptation will be to hole yourself in your office behind the computer….DON’T DO IT.

Oregon rain is actually quite pleasant once you get used to it, and you’ll get to know your surroundings and constituencies soooo much better.

Mac has lots of older people who may or may not do the computer thing. But they have they all have ideas and all want McMinnville to achieve its potential as a great place to live.

One last thing: Although your title indicates your focus will be visitors, don’t forget that visitors and residents need to coincide. If we are not happy, the visitors won’t be made to feel welcome.

Such a lovely sentiment. Stitching that last part on my throw pillow right now.

@rdNs8308 - I appreciate the advice. I believe visibility and transparency are a big part of the job, so I'll do my best to be around in the open - in my interview, I said that I'd make the first Linfield football game following my arrival (Homecoming, it turns out), but that I'd also be available to speak to as many groups and organizations about tourism and McMinnville as possible. I might even do "open office hours" at a local coffee place, if there's interest.

There will be meetings and deskbound time, for sure, but the job isn't worth doing if there isn't community buy-in and support for what Visit McMinnville is doing. I tend to be the all-in sort, so making those connections is definitely at the top of my to-do list.

@otis - Sometimes the clichés slip out, you know?

sorry...I meant I was stitching rdNs8308's somewhat threatening comment on my throw pillow....not yours!
