Lafayette man dies in crash

 

SHERWOOD - A Lafayette man was killed Sunday night in a two-vehicle head-on crash on Southwest Roy Rogers Road, south of Bull Mountain road, in rural Sherwood.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office identified the victim as Cristopher Michels, 41. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shortly before 7 p.m., Michels was driving a 2002 Ford Crown Victoria northbound on Roy Rogers Road when he crossed the centerline and collided with a southbound 2013 Nissan Sentra driven by Maria Cervantes-Acero, 66, of Newberg.

She and her grandson, David Gonzales-Cervantes, 19, of Newberg, were transported by ground ambulance to Oregon Health & Science University in Portland with serious injuries.

The Nissan was knocked about 100 feet from the point of impact. It has not been determined why Michels crossed the centerline. There were no signs that he attempted to steer or stop his car to avoid the collision, and no signs of impairment.

Roy Rogers Road was closed for about three hours while the scene was cleared the an investigation took place.
