Get ballots in by 8 p.m. May 17

Ballots are due May 17 for Oregon’s primary election. They may be placed in ballot drop boxes throughout the county, or mailed, but must be postmarked by May 17, and arrive at the clerk’s office within seven days, to be counted. A list of ballot drop boxes is available on the clerk’s page on the county website at co.yamhill.or.us.

As of Thursday at 2 p.m., county voter turnout was at 15.9 % — 11,633 ballots turned in out of the 75,000 total.

County Clerk Brian Van Bergen also urges people to sign their ballots carefully, saying, “sign like you sign your mortgage, not like you sign for your latte,” to avoid having your ballot rejected if your ballot signature does not match the one on file at the clerk’s office.

Most drop boxes are located at city hall locations. However, Amity’s drop box is at the city library on Trade Street. Newberg has boxes at Jaquith Park, the PCC Center and the Public Safety building, and McMinnville has boxes at the courthouse, clerk’s office, library and Chemeketa campus on Norton Lane.

Races for county commissioner, state and federal legislative seats, and judicial seats are on the ballot, along with measures for voters in Dayton, the Amity School District and the Sheridan Fire District.

Drop boxes are open 24 hours a day. Ballots must be placed in them by 8 p.m. May 17.

The News-Register will post results Tuesday night at newsregister.com.
