Tattoo's on a cop look really unprofessional. I feel sorry for the chief and the sheriff, probably not much they can do about it. The hiring pool is probably not very deep.

Joel, from this article, that is your takeaway? Could you be a more “get off my lawn” curmudgeon.

Curmudgeon? I might have a more descriptive word, but this is a family newspaper. I personally like the ink, and assume that the majority of male officers also sport tattoos. What does that have to do with professional ethics? (Double standard perhaps?)

As i think more about it, you guys are right to call me out.
Tat's on a cop (male or female) do look unprofessional to me. I don't know why, they just do. But this article is supposed to be about her as a person and women in LE in general. It was really rude of me to pop off with a comment like that. I need to do a better job of learning to just keep my opinions to myself more often.

It takes a big person with an open mind to re-evaluate an opinion and go on record to correct it. High five to you, Joel R.

I think this is a great article and I applaud this deputy and the Sheriff's Office for her service to our community. There have been previous female deputies, but they have tended to not stay on very long. I hope she stays and continues to add her diversity to our law enforcement. Thank you deputy Matlock!

Amen, Spartan! I was privileged to do several citizen ride-alongs with a female YCSO deputy many years ago. I was highly impressed with her community interaction and professionalism. Along the way I also became aware of some of her challenges working in a male-dominated environment.

Welcome to Yamhill County, Ms. Matlock. Best wishes and thanks for helping to keep us safe!

I'm still laughing about "get off my lawn curmudgeon."
Great phrase.
