Another new low for the NR. The insensitivity you exhibited in deciding to name the woman who endured unspeakable abuse at the hands of her now-incarcerated abuser is stunning. Whatever integrity this paper once had is long gone. This is unforgivable.

BOC

I inadvertently left my name off the following comment.
I submitted that on behalf of every woman who has suffered at the hands of an abuser.
Mary Starrett
Yamhill County Commissioner

Shasta

Mary,
And the fact that you commented twice on the matter under the guise of "BOC, County Commissioner" casts a larger spotlight on the entire story.
Did she ask for your help or did you volunteer it?

tagup

Is your opinion of the NR shared by the entire board of commissioners?
Maybe speaking as a citizen would be more appropriate.
Integrity indeed....

Let’s all remember, it was Mary Starrett who brought up a former commissioner’s attempted suicide when the paper had reported on an accidental shooting. Where is her integrity on sharing what seemed like personal and private information? Mary is a farce and a fool! Someone should stop her from acting like she speaks for the entire board. She is an embaresment

Oops... hit ‘post’ instead of spell check Mary is a complete embarrassment for our county. Does she realize how low the threshold is for getting herself re-called? Since the number of signatures on a recall petition is based on the votes Gov Brown received in Yamhill county when she was elected for her full term, it’s not too high. Do we really want to put up with two more years of her crap?

DG

Mary, would you please change your NR name to something such as MS-BOC? You are not “the board of commissioners”, and do not represent the entire board on this forum. You are “a” commissioner.

Tonight here we go! BOC is clutching her pearls again! The N-R had to GET HER PERMISSION to print her name! This is called holding your power, but you prefer her stay hidden in shame! Well SHAME ON YOU BOC!!!

Where does Mary Starrett get off thinking she can pass judgment on anyone about how "low" they are? Huge mistake for the N-R to refer to her as "Mother Teresa" in her last election cycle. Now she thinks she can pass judgment on them. BTW, isn't Starrett suppose to be at work at 2:47 and 2:49 pm on a Thursday? Is she using a county computer to post these remarks?

Mary S.- Why do you think that Christina Malae should hide in shame? We need more victims of domestic violence to stand up and speak out. This victim did nothing to be ashamed of. There is no reason why she should hide in the shadows. She is standing up for herself and should be very proud to have her name attached to this act of bravery, accountability and self-assertion.

Today is a new day, Mary. Women aren't going to be shamed or afraid to speak truth to power.

I find it interesting that everyone who has commented, with the exception of one, has neglected to put their first and last name on their comments. People seem to have lost sight as to what the article did, which was to print graphic details about something very personal. Instead, people chose to bash an elected official who stated that it was insensitive to print the victim, no let me rephrase that, the survivor’s name, in an article with explicit details of the abuse she has survived. I don’t disagree with some of the comments spoken such as "the insensitivity you exhibited in deciding to name the woman who endured unspeakable abuse..." and "this victim did nothing to be ashamed of." With that said, the comment “we need more victims of domestic violence to stand up and speak out” I’m curious as to where exactly the survivor spoke out in this article?

As a friend of Christina’s, I know for a fact that not once was she contacted regarding any article written about her and her now ex-husband. She certainly did not give permission for it to be published; not in Feb., not in Nov., and not for this article that mentions her by name for the first time. If she wrote it, that’s one thing, but she didn’t; she wasn’t even asked.

The comments in this thread with peoples uneducated assumptions and attacking a politician who wrote on behalf of all women who have suffered at the hands of an abusive partner saddens me. When we can start to see others as people, look for what we have in common as opposed to attacking one another, maybe victims of domestic violence will find safe people to come beside them and help them rather than place judgement on them or others.
