I hope that workers who feel they are underpaid, are considering the benefits they are given as part of their wage. I have relatives whose health insurance premiums are $1500 and up per month and deductibles that much or more, with the final portion IF covered by insurance, at best 50-80%.

Loretta,
I assure you, they do. So do other counties when they offer YC employees positions that pay well above and then ensure them that they also get stay inside their scope of work in doing their job.

Having healthcare is standard. County staff should not be expected to take subpar wages because they have basic healthcare. The wages here aren't competitive with neighboring counties, cities offering similar services, or private industries where work type overlaps. If the county wants to recruit and retain experienced, effective, employees who will work in these tough positions, they need to offer competitive wages. While other counties can attract our workers, we don't have the same appeal, so we need to keep the local folks willing to work these tough jobs, which means valuing them, and paying them accordingly.
