Berschauer makes it sound like this was strategically planned for a long time. That is totally false. There has been no plan. Frankly, the County got lucky that this building became available to them. Although it will be interesting to see how the $19 million plan works out over time. Pretty amazing that they seem to think they can commit themselves to a price tag of this size. Total luck, not planning Lindsey.

@ Pirate, you're mistaken. I left the County over a year ago and this had been discussed for at least 2 years before I left.

@ KathyA, this is way older than 2 years old. The County facilities issues have been serious for over 20 years. There was discussion of developing a plan but it never got any traction. Berschauer thinks that's a great thing that the County stumbled around for years with substandard facilities, some of which like the main courthouse would be flat in the event of an earthquake. So this option may have been discussed for two years, but the need for action and a developed facilities plan is decades overdue. Berschauer credits past commissioners for doing nothing. It will be interesting to see what the net gain from sale will be of some of the buildings that the County currently owns. I don't think it will come anywhere near to $19 million.

@Pirate. Thanks. I should have clarified. The move to the OMI building was being discussed at least as far back as the **VID shutdown. I know the buildings have been unsafe for much longer than that.
