The March 2nd Planning Commission meeting should be interesting.

One would presume that the design would include a facade of 1890s style brick in keeping with the historic character of third street, it should be a no brainier. They weren't using Roman concrete that can endure for millennia. These buildings are inevitably decaying and no doubt were not designed with even a moderate earthquake in mind.

“(The HLC) seemed to think that they can make decisions for landowners and not take into account their financial situations, age, ability and desire to restore a property they own,” Clarke said. “This seems to be dangerously close to infringing on property owners’ rights.”

This is comical. Where has this guy been living? The HLC has been doing this to people around downtown for decades, not to mention try living with HOA's, etc. I lived in Kathleen Manor mobile home park 20 years ago and they would go nazi crazy if you painted your shed.

Don't get me wrong, if they want to build a $60 million hotel and stay within the building codes, more power to you. But the hypocrisy dripping off of this is golden.

WV.AVAs

To me the single most telling statement is: "there is no historic significance left of these buildings other than its location."

Oregonian

You're right WV.AVAs - that is the most accurate and compelling quote in the article.

Completely agree with WV.AVAs and Oregonian. These buildings, as they are right now, hold no substantial significant esthetic or historical value. It would be too costly to upgrade existing buildings to code. There is a developer just waiting to transform this into a thriving building, which will positively impact the local area in terms of employment, and drawing tourists, who will spend money locally.
