SHERIDAN -- Amity stood Sheridan up in the trenches and Lance Nelson moved the ball through the air as the Warriors opened Class 3A West Valley League play with a victory Friday night at Bill Chrisman Field.

Isaac Nance rushed for 130 yards on 12 carries and Colby Graham added 31 rushing yards and a touchdown as Amity shut out the Spartans, 18-0.

Sheridan (2-2, 0-2 WVL) was under the gun from the get-go, as Dominique Card slipped on the opening kickoff and Tyler Berrier of the Warriors recovered the ball at the Spartans' 26-yard line. Five plays later, Nelson found Clint Hatch for a 29-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring.

Amity (3-1, 1-0 WVL) intercepted three passes and forced three three-and-outs on defense, a counterweight to 120 penalty yards incurred during the game. T.R. McShane accounted for the Warriors' other touchdown, on a 5-yard pass from Nelson in the second quarter.

Amity hosts Taft on Oct. 3 at 7 p.m., while Sheridan travels to Dayton for a 7 p.m. tilt.

North Marion 48, Yamhill-Carlton 8

YAMHILL -- Tigers head coach Jerry Sutton summed up his club's performance against North Marion in their Class 4A Oregon West Conference opener with pith.

"They handled us pretty good tonight," Sutton explained. "Can’t say it any other way."

A much improved defensive second half for Yamhill-Carlton could not bring them back from a 33 point halftime defect as they lost to the Huskies 48-8 at home.

Job Wiedner's second quarter touchdown catch from Zach Rhodes got the Tigers on the board, but the Y-C defense struggled to make stops before the second half.

"We started slowing ourselves down and doing our assignments, we were just running by the ball on defense all night long," Sutton said. "You’ve got to slow your mind down, concentrate on what you’re supposed to do."

On the other end, the Tigers' usually capable running scheme was shut off by North Marion's stout physical presence in the box.

"They put a lot of heat on you, so we’ve been working on a fast release on the football. They’re awfully quick. They load the box with eight guys. They just bear down," Sutton said. "That 72 (North Marion nose tackle Nat Barrell), he’s hard to move around, he’s a stud. They’ve got some speed on the edges."

Y-C (1-3, 0-1 OWC) will head for Stayton on Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. to continue OWC play.
