Amity flour mill gets go-ahead after lengthly negotiations

Baker Bram Yoffie and Wesley Stoller, owner of Chatanika Farms, propose to grow a variety of heirloom grains, mill the flour onsite, bake bread and operate a farmstand located on Winch Road.

The application was initially opposed by Friends of Yamhill County and 1,000 Friends of Oregon, but after lengthy negotiations, the groups reached an agreement and on Thursday, a spokesman for the county group said it supports the application.

Commissioners and county planning director Ken Friday said they disagreed with some of the numerous conditions imposed by the agreement, including any cookies that might be sold there, but did not contest them. Friday approved the application in August, subject to the settlement agreement.

Gaston farmer Anthony Boutard, who did not appear at Thursday’s hearing, also appealed the application and submitted written arguments.

When are we ever going to learn that Friends of Yamhill County and 1,000 Friends of Oregon are actually not our friends and use their considerable funding and political influence to try and intimidate young entrepreneurs like Chatanika Farms and their efforts by threatening legal action if they do not do as they wish.

That is extortion and it needs to stop now!
