Police believe stabbing gang-related

The incident is believed to be gang-related, according to Capt. Dennis Marks of the McMinnville police, who said the suspect remains at large.

The victim, whose identity was withheld, was transported by McMinnville police to the Willamette Valley Medical Center. He underwent treatment there for a minor hand wound.

Marks said police had identified a “probable suspect,” but still had further investigative work to do.

He gave this account of the precipitating incident:

An Oregon State Police trooper, accompanied by a recruit, were in the area when they observed a fight develop in the parking lot. When the trooper activated his emergency lights and siren, a Latino male fled on foot, leaving the victim behind.

The recruit pursued the man, but lost sight of him. He was seen in the vicinity of Birch, Cedar and Yamhill streets.

“He could have gone into City Park, or into a residential area, or been picked up by someone,” Marks said.

He was wearing a dark sweatshirt over a white T-shirt with knee-high dark shorts and white knee-high socks. He had his hair in a ponytail.

Clothing discarded at the scene led police to conclude the incident might be gang-related.

Anyone with information is asked to call McMinnville police at 503-434-7307.
