New program aimed at wine careers
A $48,000 grant from the James S. Kemper Foundation is supporting the one-year program, which will include a summer institute, fall harvest experience, winter wine career exploration course and spring internship at a Willamette Valley winery.
Wine industry professionals from area vineyards and wineries will teach courses at the summer institute. Courses will cover growing grapes, making wine, sustainability, marketing and other issues. Students also will work at the International Pinot Noir Celebration.
During harvest, students will learn about vineyard operations and help bring in the grape crop.
In the January Term course, they will learn about careers ranging from viticulturist to label designer.
Internships will offer them a chance to experience day-to-day operations in their chosen field.
