Local battery earns award
McMinnville’s Bravo Battery, attached to the Oregon Army National Guard’s 218 Field Artillery Battalion, was named the best battery in the U.S. last summer.
It will receive the Alexander Hamilton Award at a ceremony slated from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the McMinnville Armory. The public is invited.
Known as “The Governor’s Own,” Bravo Battery has 88 members. Most are combat veterans, as the unit has been deployed overseas three times in recent years.
Bravo has thrice won the state’s direct fire trophy and claimed the national direct fire title in 2012. It was chosen to fire symbolic howitzer salutes during high profile events around the state.
Capt. Derek Hotchkiss, the unit’s commander, said Bravo also completed a decontamination mission last year. Although the work was outside the scope of their formal training, battery members completed the mission and set a national time standard while doing it.
Former commander Major Vincent Habeck nominated the battery for the Alexander Hamilton Award.
