County seeks transit design bids

The Oregon Department of Transportation has awarded the county $1.16 million for the project in the form of a ConnectOregon grant.

The county plans to replace and improve the current transit center, which consists of little more than a row of bus shelters along Fifth Street, in front of the county courthouse and jail.

The new center will be built at the former site of the Yamhill Community Action Partnership on Second Street, just east of the McMinnville post office. The county’s contribution of that property is sufficient to cover its 20 percent local match requirement.

The Yamhill County Transit Area plans to build a modest, 700-square-foot transit office, an area with covered seating, a 400-square-foot public restroom and facilities to accommodate bicycles. The remainder of the site will consist of six bus bays and transit lanes.

In addition, the county received a grant from the Oregon Arts Commission to incorporate art into the plans.

Of particular concern is the public restroom, as it will be the only publicly accessible one downtown, so is expected to get extremely high use. The county’s instructions ask designers to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act as well as provide for the “minimum maintenance and maximum functionality, including but not limited to durable long-lasting fixtures that resist misuse and anti-graffiti coatings on all interior and exterior surfaces.”

The county expects to complete the project by Jan. 31, 2014. Design proposals are due to the commissioners’ office at 434 N.E. Evans St. by 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 2.

I spoke to one of the drivers at Yamhill Transit and was told that they make $11.50 and hour with no benefits since First Student took over. When it was run by YCAP they had awesome insurance. This just doesn't seem fair. It seems like the county would have been more considerate with the drivers by making sure they retained insurance when outsourcing to First Student.

" In response to this comment, I would point out that the Yamhill transit service is not provided by First Student. First Student provides school bus transportation services to the McMinnville School District as well as many other surrounding school districts. First Transit is the provider for the Yamhill transit service."
