Blowout and a close shave
SHERIDAN – Adonis Hopkins of Vernonia strayed too far from third base, and Matt Bushbaum and Cody Herron of Sheridan caught it.
Herron, the Spartans’ catcher, whipped the ball over to Bushbaum after a Jordan McKnight pitch. Hopkins couldn’t return to third base and broke for home instead. McKnight joined in, and the rundown was on.
Eventually, Jackson Meyer came over from his shortstop position to help his teammates. Boone Meyer left second base, Hayden Purrone left first base and Noah DiSabatino crept over from left field as insurance. Jackson Meyer finally tagged Hopkins out to end the top of the seventh inning, and the Vernonia player looked as if he’d been chased by a whole baseball team.
“That’s some higher-level baseball stuff right there,” Spartans coach Todd Peterson said. “We have to take advantage of those situations.”
In the bottom half of the inning, with Class 3A Sheridan down 9-6 to the Class 2A/1A Loggers, Peterson’s
team did just that.
Bushbaum opened the bottom of the seventh inning with a triple and scored on a wild pitch. Jackson Meyer scored on a fielding error, McKnight singled DiSabatino home and the Spartans loaded the bases for Andrew Glynn.
Glynn hit a hard ground ball that the Vernonia shortstop fumbled, allowing Purrone to score from third base. Sheridan 10, Vernonia 9.
“Hell of a comeback,” Peterson said. “I’ve got to give their guys credit. After we beat them up pretty good (in the first game), they kept their heads up.”
After dropping their season opener, the Spartans (3-1) have now won their last three games, capping a doubleheader against the Loggers (2-2) Saturday afternoon with a comeback from an 8-2 deficit in the fifth inning.
“Honestly, you can’t come back down 8-2 from one person,” Boone Meyer said. “These are team wins. We’re all enjoying the sport right now.”
For Sheridan, the good times start at the plate. Meyer went 3-for-4 in the second game, snapping a 13-for-13 streak at the plate but scoring three runs for his team. Bushbaum went 2-for-4 with two RBI and his seventh-inning triple, and Jackson Meyer went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
McKnight picked up the win in his first pitching appearance of the season, allowing one hit in 1 2/3 innings pitched. He also
went 2-for-2 with an RBI from the plate.
Sheridan played Western Mennonite Monday and plays Gold Beach Wednesday at 5 p.m. at P.K. Park in Eugene.
