Armed Forces Day event Saturday

Armed Forces Day, celebrated annually on May 18, is set aside to honor veterans, as well as active-duty personnel, from all branches of the military. “We want to highlight their service and recognize their sacrifices,” said Al LeMay of the Yamhill County Republican Central Committee, which is sponsoring the celebration.

The Party in the Park will feature guest speakers. They include state Rep. Jim Weidner of Yamhill, who will introduce World War II Medal of Honor nominee Leonard DeWitt.

DeWitt is a McMinnville resident who served in the Pacific Theater, but never received the honors he earned. Weidner is sponsoring a bill in the state Legislature asking Congress to review DeWitt’s medal status.

In addition to the speakers, the event will include free food and recognition for other veterans.
