Kurt Schrader votes to block Syrian refugees from US

PORTLAND — Oregon Rep. Kurt Schrader was one of nearly 50 Democrats to support legislation aimed at blocking the resettlement of Iraqi and Syrian refugees in the U.S.

Those Democrats were joined by all but two Republicans as the House passed the bill by a veto-proof 289-137 margin.

Thursday's vote came less than a week after terrorist attacks in Paris killed 129 people. Schrader says the bill does not shut down the asylum process, but makes it stronger.

Rep. Greg Walden, Oregon's only Republican congressman, joined Schrader in voting for the legislation.

Democratic Reps. Earl Blumenauer and Suzanne Bonamici opposed it. Blumenauer says the action is shameful, unnecessary and makes the U.S. less safe.

Rep. Peter DeFazio missed the vote. The Oregonian reports he is recovering from eye surgery.
