Oregon's McKenzie Pass opens today

BEND — The McKenzie Highway, a National Scenic Byway, opened at 9 a.m. today, granting access to popular hiking destinations in the Three Sisters and Mount Washington wilderness areas.

The Bulletin in Bend reports that the highway threads through nearly 40 miles of lava fields and forests, offering up-close views of the Cascades, a gateway to quiet alpine lakes and a glimpse of the state's past between Sisters and Eugene

The Oregon Department of Transportation closes the old McKenzie Pass Highway over the Cascades seasonally, sometimes as early as October.
