SHERIDAN - A Sheridan man was arrested Friday morning on charges alleging he stabbed a male acquaintance.

The Yamhill County Sheriff's Office identified the suspect as Danial Alan Neal, 34. He was charged with one count each of second-degree assault, a Class B felony; menacing, a Class A misdemeanor, and unlawful use of a weapon, a Class C felony. The assault charge is a Measure 11 offense, punishable on conviction by a mandatory minimum prison sentence.

Sgt. Chris Ray gave this account:

About 7 a.m., the stabbing was reported in an apartment in the 500 block of Southwest Jefferson Street. Deputies responded and spoke with the victim, 36-year-old Dale Vanbibber, who sustained minor cuts to his side.

Neal lives in the apartment. Vanbibber was spending the night. He said he awoke to Neal stabbing him with a kitchen knife with an eight-inch blade. The two struggled and Neal fled the location on foot. He was taken into custody later.

Vanbibber did not require medical attention. A motive for the stabbing has not been established.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact deputy Robert Eubanks at 503-434-7506, or at

I wouldn't let that guy stay on my couch.

What a convivial house guest. Does anyone believe this is his first brush with a felony?

Why the rush to judgement against the house guest? He was the one stabbed by the guy who lived in the apartment. I didn't see anything in the article that would invite this kind of criticism of the guy who was assaulted.

Whoops--you're right, Sponge. Lulu has erred. I think gazing into those Rasputin eyes rattled my brain.
