AMITY - A McMinnville woman, involved in what the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office characterized as a "drug deal gone bad," was injured during a fight and subsequently arrested.

She was identified as Shawna Hope Anderson, 25. She was charged with one count each of third-degree robbery, fourth-degree assault, delivery of a controlled substance/heroin within 1,000 feet of a school and possession of a controlled substance/heroin. Anderson was lodged in jail on $42,500 bail.

The sheriff's office gave this account:

Members of the Yamhill County Interagency Narcotics Team and Community Response Team were doing surveillance on a vehicle that stopped at the intersection of Church Avenue and Getchell Street, which is across from Amity Middle School.

When law enforcement personnel contacted the vehicle's two occupant, who had been in an altercation, officers discovered a small amount of heroin, packaged for sale, along with digital scales in the street. Additional heroin was discovered in Anderson's possession.

Heroin use is on the rise, Sheriff Tim Svenson said, and incidents like this are a result of the spike.

"Opiate abuse continues to be a focus of our drug team and road deputies," he said. "Traditionally, methamphetamine has been the major drug linked to property and person crimes."

Svenson added, "Heroin is beginning to cause similar problems due to its incredible addictive nature."

He urges parents to clean out their medicine cabinets of unused prrescription pain killers whose abuse can often lead to heroin addiction.
