Sewer work slated downtown

The project covers an area bounded by Second, Ford, Fifth and Johnson streets. It will get underway next week.

Larry Sherwood, engineering technician and inspector, said the work is expected to take about five months. He said streets would have to be closed periodically, but crews would avoid simultaneous closure of Third and Fifth streets, as that would unduly impede east-west traffic.

In some cases, workers may be able to pull a section of pipe out through an excavation at one end. In others, they will have to dig the pipe out a piece at a time, creating a trench.

The work will requires the re-routing some storm drains, separating storm sewer and sanitary sewer lines so that stormwater doesn't overwhelm the sewage treatment plant in rainy periods.

The impact on local businesses should be minimal. No interruptions in water or sewer service are contemplated.
