Linfield choir to premiere work May 4

New piece commissioned with support from the Lacroute Arts Series

The Linfield College choir's spring concert will feature the world premiere of a new choral work.

The choir will debut “Our Flags Are Wafting in Hope and Grief” at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 4, in the Richard and Lucille Ice Auditorium, located in Melrose Hall on campus. Composer Gabriel Jackson will give a pre-concert talk at 3 p.m. in the same location.

Jackson has been in residence at Linfield this week. He has been attending rehearsals, visiting classes and working with music students and other students across campus.

The new piece was commissioned for the Linfield choir with support from the Lacroute Arts Series to highlight the relationship between the arts and social change.

The text is a poem by Estonian poet Doris Kareva. It deals with the singing revolution in the Baltic States, where choral singing and music played a key role in cementing national identity and served as a vehicle for resistance to the Soviet occupation, the composer said.

The concert also will feature the Concert Choir, the Wildcat Men’s Glee Club and the Women’s Vocal Ensemble presenting music by Morten Lauridsen, Sydney Guillaume and Veljo Tormis, as well as the world premiere of “Dirge in Woods,” a new work by Linfield senior Yucheng Zhang.

Linfield professors Anna Song and Chris Engbretson will conduct the choirs. For more information, call 503-883-2275 or visit
