WVL playoffs under way, Amity girls in

The boys got underway Tuesday, while the girls began play Wednesday.

The boys playoffs started with Sheridan boys hosting Gervais. The Spartans (13-11, 6-8) beat the Cougars (6-19, 3-11) 45-38, and they move on to play at 7 p.m. today at Amity.

The winner of Amity and Sheridan will go on Saturday to face No. 3-seeded Westside Christian. The winner of that game will earn a spot in the 3A state playoffs.

The two heavyweights of the West Valley League, No. 2-ranked Horizon Christian and No. 4-ranked Dayton, face off in the championship game at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Girls get tournament rolling Wednesday

The WVL girls basketball playoffs started 7 p.m. Wednesday with two contests. One matchup was Sheridan vs. Westside Christian, which the Eagles won 31-29. The two faced each other in the regular season finale and the Spartans upset the Eagles at home 31-25. Sheridan was eliminated from playoff contention.The Eagles face fourth-seeded Dayton at 7 p.m. today.

In the second game, Amity hosted Gervais, and won in thrilling fashion, defeating the Cougars 51-47 in overtime to earn a spot in the 3A state playoffs. The Warriors finished second in the WVL while Gervais finished third. Amity has won 15 of its last 16 games.

Amity plays at 5 p.m. Saturday vs. Willamina for the WVL playoff championship. Both teams are already secured a spot in the state tournament, which opens next weekend.

Gervais plays at 1:30 p.m. Saturday vs. the winner of tonight’s Westside Christian-Dayton game.
