Planners to hear vacation rental requests

Six vacation rentals are currently operating in the city, according to the planning department. The new applications could push that figure to 10.

Corey Guinnee and Sylla McClellan, who succeeded earlier in persuading the city to eliminate a requirement that vacation rentals be spaced at least 660 feet apart, have submitted a request to operate a vacation rental from their three-bedroom, 2,250-square-foot residence at 905 N.W. Birch St.

Recommending approval, the staff notes the couple have “relocated to Portland, but wish to retain a home base in McMinnville, given that they have businesses here.” It went on to say, “Converting their home into a vacation rental, as opposed to a traditional, long-term rental, will allow them the option of staying there when necessary.”

Applicant Shannon Thorson is seeking approval to operate a vacation rental from a two-bedroom, 1,920-square-foot residence at 208 S.E. Baker St. It is classified as a “contributory historic structure.”

Thorson’s property also was ineligible previously, due to the spacing requirement. The staff is recommending approval, saying the use would “ensure the property will remain an asset to the neighborhood, in addition to allowing for the ongoing preservation of a historic home.”

Jayson Murray and Karen Saez are seeking to operate a vacation rental out of a three-bedroom, 2,618 square-foot residence they own at 1330 N.E. Ford St. Recommending approval, the staff notes the property “is ideally located within walking distance to McMinnville’s historical downtown.”

In the fourth application, Stacy Martin is seeking to operate a vacation rental out of a two-bedroom, 1,560-square-foot home at 218 S.E. Washington St. The staff cited the proximity to downtown and incentive to maintain an older home in recommending approval.
