Permit volume, valuation take jump

The city of McMinnville issued 23 building permits in July, as local building continued its recent rebound.

Seven were for apartment buildings, led by a permit issued to J. Conser and Sons LLC for a 75-unit, $6.2 million complex planned for the 2300 block of Northeast Lafayette Avenue. The other 11 were for single-family residences — the most issued in a single month so far this year.

The city also issued one commercial permit, for a $760,000 Subaru car dealership Jim Doran is developing next to an existing dealership on Northeast Third Street.

Last year, the city issued 86 building permits for single-family residences, the most since the pre-recession boom year of 2007. The rebound has continued this year, with 10 being issued in May and 9 in June, setting the stage for July's 11.

New residential construction is a marker of economic improvement, and with unemployment beginning to return near pre-recession levels, the economic situation is showing signs of improvement in Yamhill County.
