No Distinguished Service Awards this year, Jaycees say

McMinnville Jaycees announced Feb. 22 that they are canceling the Distinguished Service Awards this year.

Started by the club in the 1950s, the DSA program annually recognizes a man and woman of the year, junior citizen and outstanding educator and farmer.

But this year, no awards banquet will be held. The club, which has been regrouping over the past year, instead will focus on fundraising and building its membership.

"We realized that in order to make this an event deserving of the spirit of DSA we needed to completely start from scratch. New fundraising, new venue, revamped award categories, and more," said a letter signed by Tina Oakes, club president.

She said there's not enough time for this to happen prior to the usual date of the banquet, late March or early April. However, "by no means does this mean we are removing the DSA banquet forever," she said. "The DSA deserves to be a grand and memorable event, and we will strive to make sure it is," she said.

As a former JayCee, I'm sorry to see this occur. This organization has provided the community many needed programs and events throughout the years. I sincerely hope they can get back on their feet soon!
