Multimedia journalist to talk about feminism
Sarah Mirk, an online editor for Bitch Media, will present “Five Bright Ideas in Feminist Media” on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at Linfield College. Her free talk is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Riley 201.
Mirk will discuss the state of feminist media. She will illustrate her ideas with art that activist groups have created over the past year in the United States.
She said critics contend both journalism and feminism are in decline. But in fact, she said, they remain lively and dynamic.
Mirk, who graduated from Grinnell College in 2008, is a multimedia journalist who focuses on gender, politics and history. She writes daily pop culture articles, hosts the podcast Popaganda and oversees her magazine’s social media efforts.
Previously, she worked as a staff reporter for The Portland Mercury and The Seattle Stranger, sister publications in the alternative genre. She is the author of “Sex from Scratch: Making Your Own Relationship Rules,” scheduled for release this summer.
Her talk is being sponsored by the Linfield College Mass Communication Department and Linfield College Office of Academic Affairs. For more information, contact Susan Currie Sivek, assistant professor of mass communication, at 503-883-2521 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
