Mohler, McShane shine at Meet of Champions

SALEM – Dayton senior Sydney Mohler set a personal best in the long jump and Amity sophomore Lindsay McShane won the shot put at the Meet of Champions, held Saturday at Willamette University in Salem.

Mohler won the long jump competition with a leap of 17 feet, 1.5 inches, a quarter of an inch better than the jump that won her the Class 3A state championship in 2013. Mohler also recorded a pair of ninth-place finishes in the 100-meter hurdles (17.27 seconds) and 300-meter hurdles (50.80).

McShane unleashed a put of 37-2 to win the shot and also took ninth place in the discus throw (99-10).

Amity senior Riley Moore finished seventh in the boys’ 200 meters (23.77), and Dayton’s Kevin Castillo took 10th place in the boys’ shot put (42-4). Pirates senior Kate Grace captured ninth place in the girls’ 800 meters (2:35.84).

Amity and Dayton will join Sheridan and Willamina in a scheduled Class 3A West Valley League meet at Sheridan High School Thursday at 4 p.m.


WVL at Westside Christian

TIGARD – The Amity girls track and field team finished second and the boys finished third at a Class 3A West Valley League meet hosted by Westside Christian at Tigard High School on Wednesday.

The Warriors scored 89.83 points in the girls’ team standings, second only to host Westside Christian (140 points). St. Paul took third place with 80.85 points, followed by Dayton (72) and Colton (62).

In the boys’ team standings, Westside Christian won the meet with 159.88 points. Warrenton finished second with 87.63 points, followed by Amity (84.01), St. Paul (76.69) and Dayton (76.26).

Amity sophomore Lindsay McShane was the only individual with three event wins, taking first place in the shot put (38-1), discus (104-1) and javelin (104-2). The Warriors also accrued events wins from Jordan Butler in the 400 (54.64) and the boys’ 4x400-meter relay team of Shane Miles, Ryan Kraemer, Butler and Riley Moore (3:45.25). Butler, Miles and Jake Riley finished 1-2-3 in the 400.

Sydney Mohler of Dayton walked away with two individual event wins and a relay victory. Mohler won the long jump (16-5) and the 100-meter hurdles (16.8) and teamed up with Katey Harris, Mireya Vazquez and Nancy Arroyo on the Pirates’ winning 4x400-meter relay team (4:30.15). Harris claimed an event win of her own, in the 800 (2:35.93).

Dayton senior Micah Cisneros cleared 12 feet even to win the pole vault, and sophomore Zach Spink’s leap of 36-3.5 was enough to win the boys’ triple jump. Kevin Castillo of the Pirates added yet another event win in the boys’ shot put (43-1).

Amity sophomore Maddie Worthington took second place in the girls’ discus throw (79-3) and fourth place in the girls’ shot put (28-2). Junior Katelynn Bliven was the second-place finisher in the girls’ 3,000 (14:20.30).

On the boys’ side, Amity’s Moore finished second in the 200 (23.2) and Isaiah Irving was the runner-up in the shot put (42-6). The Warriors’ 4x100-meter relay team of Charlie Gilpin, Moore, Butler and Irving took second in 46.77.


Y-C at Junction City Invite

JUNCTION CITY – The Yamhill-Carlton girls track and field team finished in eighth place and the boys finished in 10th place at the 14-team Junction City Invitational, held Apr. 5 in Junction City.

The Tigers recorded one event win as the girls’ 4x400-meter relay team of Kayla Archer, Perrin Xthona, Suzanne Van De Grift and Sarah King clocked 4:21.41 in victory. Van De Grift and Archer took second (1:03.80) and fourth (1:06.67), respectively, in the 400 meters.

Y-C senior Sarah King ran a season-best 27.36 seconds in the 200, finishing second, and took fourth in the 100 (13.56).

Sophomore Derric Donehoo had the highest finish among the Tigers’ boys, taking fifth place in the 1,500 (4:40.86). Junior Zachary Perkins finished sixth in the boys’ pole vault (10-6).

Yamhill-Carlton’s next scheduled varsity competition is the Banks Invitational Track Meet, to be held Saturday in Banks. Field events begin at 10 a.m., with track events slated to begin at noon.
